Spotlight on David Steer, Freelance Vision Mixer

David Steer has been in UK broadcast television for over 25 years, working on many high-profile sporting events including the Premier League, Champions League, but also world title boxing fights, and other major sports competitions.

In our Q&A, David talks about the role of the vision mixer, his experience, the qualities needed and the importance of building good relationships with the rest of the production team.

More about David

His most memorable moments

“I’ve been fortunate enough to have worked on many exciting events, but there a couple of moments that really stand out. One of them was the Arsenal-Manchester United FA cup semi-final early on in my career in April 1999. Everyone remembers Ryan Giggs’ legendary solo goal…  As an Arsenal fan, it was an incredible show to work on but also devastating for me personally!  Another moment was when Manchester City won the 2017–18 Premier League title, with yet another iconic goal, scored by Aguerro.

There are also moments that may not have been enjoyable at the time, but that you can look back on and feel proud of what you’ve achieved. This is the case of the 2015 NEP Visions fire that destroyed the building and the equipment. The teams worked tirelessly to re-program all the trucks that were brought in to replace the setups, and in just a few days, everything was up and running again. It was a huge challenge at the time and fortunately, we didn’t lose anything on the output”.

His views on the Dyvi switcher

“The Dyvi’s GPU-based architecture opens up opportunities that just aren’t available in traditional switchers. Its power lets you build incredibly complex productions, while keeping the operational side manageable for a single operator. Also, intricate setups can be configured and controlled in a way that is intuitive even for someone who doesn’t have a vision mixing background.”
